Job Summary:

The Mini Mill Technician will learn and be responsible for various positions in the Mini Mill including, but not limited to: pulping, chemical mixing, wet end operations and control, dryer operations and control, turret winder operation, packaging/finishing of product produced, quality control testing, and associated recordkeeping.

The Technician will monitor the product for any physical and/or visual quality defects and play a key role in not only the identification but also the resolution of such. Key job tasks include adjusting various machine settings to optimize the process and performing analytical testing of finished product. 


Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as an active participant in and support safety initiatives and improvements

Support research and development projects in the Mini Mill by providing knowledge and assistance as appropriate.

Perform the following job activities according to procedure:

  • Access and use Oracle job detail information for manufacturing orders
  • Enter job details into Oracle System – weights, lineal feet, defects, etc.

Perform Fiber Preparation:

  • Read, interpret, and implement prescribed formulation sheets
  • Have an understanding of different fiber types and their use
  • Be proficient at retrieving the proper furnish components
  • Operate the pulping and control system
  • Maintain records for the pulping operation
  • Provide raw material usage entry data into the Oracle system

Prepare Binder and Additive Solutions:

  • Read, interpret, and implement prescribed formulation sheets
  • Prepare required solutions for operations
  • Maintain records for the binders and additives
  • Provide raw material usage entry data into the Oracle system

Perform Wet End responsibilities:

  • Monitor the run schedule for production requirements
  • Operate wet end forming, cleaning, and refining systems
  • Understand forming operations – equipment, controls, and theory
  • Assist in operations during grade changes, start-ups, and shutdowns
  • Prepare and maintain operating records for the wet end

Perform Dry End responsibilities:

  • Monitor the run schedule for production requirements
  • Understand drying operations – equipment, controls, and theory
  • Operate steam system for the dryer section
  • Assist in operations during grade changes, start-ups, and shutdowns
  • Operate the turret winder and controls
  • Ensure proper materials are available for winding operations
  • Maintain a log of master roll detail to include width, weight, defects, etc.
  • Complete all required production reports

Prepare finished rolls for shipping and/or distribution:

  • Properly record and label to identify products produced
  • Taping, banding, wrapping of finished rolls
  • Maintain a proper supply of packaging materials

Perform Quality Control Testing of Products:

  • Be proficient at retrieving the proper specification information from Oracle for production runs
  • Collect, cut, perform analytical testing of finished product in accordance with internal specification and ISO procedure requirements
  • Interpret test results and provide feedback to the operating team to ensure that test status is known and corrective actions are taken as needed
  • Direct and participate in corrective actions as appropriate
  • Maintain an archive of test data, retains, and run documentation, etc. as required

Participate in preparation and cleanup activities in the Mini Mill area and ensure proper housekeeping is maintained

Must be able to safely and competently operate mobile equipment such as fork lift, electric pallet jack, scissor lift, floor sweepers, and power washers

Must perform confined space entry procedures as an entrant and an attendant during the course of duty

Other:

  • Must adhere to all company and location policies and safety rules
  • Must be able to work extended hours when required
  • All other duties as assigned

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required for Consideration as a Candidate:

  • High School diploma
  • Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend written instructions
  • Basic math skills
  • Intermediate computer skills

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Professional interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency and understanding of the Lydall Oracle management system
  • Proficiency and understanding of the ABB system control applications
  • Progressive experience in an industrial operations environment
  • Must be able to work with limited direction and use independent thinking
